Black Sesame Buttercream Cupcake
It's the frosting that makes this chocolate or vanilla box mix taste special if you want a nutty buttercream that is not typical and out of the box, pun intended. If you want to be extra fancy add 2 1/2 T matcha powder to the cake mix.
Ingredients for cupcakes
- 1 cake mix chocolate or vanilla
- 1 C butter milk
- 4 eggs
- oil as noted on box
Directions
- Combine all ingredients in medium bowl, beat on low 30 seconds, then medium for 2 minutes, scraping sides.
- Fill cupcake liners about 7/8 full, makes about 21 cupcakes.
- Bake 17 minutes until toothpick comes out clean, don't overbake or it will be dry.
Ingredients for Black Sesame Buttercream

- 1 1/2 cups tallow (or butter) softened
- 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar, sifted
- 1 tablespoon whole milk
- pinch of salt
Directions
- Place the black sesame seeds in a food processor or spice grinder. pulse until the seeds are ground up- the grounds start to clump up.
- Use a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment add the ground sesame seeds, tallow/butter, and powdered sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add milk and salt, beat for another 30 seconds. add more milk if you’d like a fluffier buttercream, one tablespoon at a time.
- Fill piping bag or plastic sandwich bag with a 1M tip and swirl from the middle to the outside for a rose design.
